What Are the Grades, Sizes, and Packaging for Pineapple Shipping?

Pineapples are graded by degree of skin coloration, size (weight), absence of defects and disease, and uniformity of these characteristics before packing. Other characteristics that are looked at before packing are:

• Maturity
• Firmness
• Shape
• Fat eyes
• Well-cured broken stem

How to Ship Pineapples?

Because pineapples can quickly produce pressure sores from being pressed under their own weight if not packaged properly, this fruit must be shipped in specific corrugated board cartons, crates, and fruit crates. Corrugated board cartons are boxes that are perforated on the top and sides. We recommend that they are packed upright versus on their sides. Each box contains 12 individual cells where each cell can carry one pineapple, adding more protection for the fruit during transport.

Signs to look out for are pineapples suffering from a translucent appearance, which makes them unsuitable for transporting. Also, when pineapples are bruised before transport, they are more likely to spoil or rot rapidly. They should be rejected and not transported.

How Long Does Pineapple Last?

Here are the maximum duration of storage and transport for pineapples:

• Green, Unripe: 10 – 12 degrees Celsius can be stored from 2-4 Weeks
• 50% Yellow: 7 – 10 degrees Celsius can be stored from 3-4 Weeks
• Ripe: 4.5 – 7 degrees Celsius can be stored from 2-3 Weeks

It is always recommended that pineapple is eaten as fresh as possible or canned, though canning includes further processing. 

How Long Does Cut Pineapple Last in the Fridge?

Once the pineapple has been received by the consumer and it is cut, the fruit will last about 5 to 7 days. As said before, pineapple should be eaten as fresh as possible unless it is canned.
